Fruit of the Spirit – Peace
Fruit of the Spirit – Peace
Let’s do a little study on the Fruit of the Spirit – Peace. Would you like to be filled with PEACE? You can be.
We are studying about the Fruit of the Spirit. That’s 9 fruit in one. These fruit, which include PEACE, are to define our character.
Peace is the third and final characteristic of our inward state mentioned in these verses. We talked about the first two previously in our posts on Love and Joy.
Our Key Verses
Galatians 5:22, 23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
What is Peace?
We typically think of peace as the absence of troubles or turmoil. In the Greek, the peace in this passage means quietness or rest.
This peace comes from the inside. It is not based on our outward circumstances, but instead comes from the Holy Spirit living within us. It is an inward emotion; an inward peace.
Some other ways we might describe Peace are:
- Calmness
- Lack of worry
- Confidence in God
- Harmony in our relationships
- Inner contentment
- Tranquility of our soul
Peace is a gift from God
The Christian character described in Gal 5:22 and 23 are produced by the Holy Spirit. They cannot be produced by our own efforts. These fruits can only be found in believers that are yielded to the Holy Spirit; those who submit to His leading.
As a Christian we are to desire to possess and manifest the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. When we possess something it belongs to us. When something is manifested in us it is obvious to those who see or know us. The Fruit of the Spirit should be easy to identify in our actions and our appearance.
This Fruit of the Spirit – Peace is not related to our circumstances. It is a peace that God gives us. It comes from within us and the world cannot take it away.
Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Peace is a gift from God.
One of the reasons we can experience inward Joy is because of the Peace which God gives us.
John 16:33
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
We can have inward peace through our confidence that God is who He says He is. We can have confidence in Him. He is in control of all things.
We can experience this peace if we are abiding (walking) with Christ. We need Him to help us in this world.
Peace with God
Romans 5:1
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
As believers, we know that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. We have been forgiven and we can now approach the throne of God with confidence.
Until we have peace with God, we will not experience this inward peace.
Peace of Mind
Philippians 4:6,7
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Being careful for nothing assures us that we do not need to worry. We are to bring our cares and concerns to the Lord. He is in control. We can leave our burdens with God. He offers us peace in our hearts and minds if we will give Him our concerns.
Peace in the Church
Colossians 3:15
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Ephesians 4: 3
Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
There are many places in Scripture that talk about the need for unity in the church. I love how these passages share that if we allow the peace of God to be a priority in our own hearts that we will be able to have peace within the church.
We are to Seek Peace
I Peter 3:11
Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
Peace can be ours. It is one of the fruits produced in us through the Holy Spirit. We simply need to yield our lives to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
May we seek God’s peace and allow Him to filled our lives with that inward peace that only comes from God.
