Simple Prayer Journal

A Simple Prayer Journal is a tool that can help us in our prayer time.  If you have difficulty staying focused or if you want a place to record your prayers and your answers to prayers, a Simple Prayer Journal may be just what you need.

Why keep a prayer journal?

A Prayer Journal:

  • Helps you stay focused during your prayertime
  • Acts as a reminder for specific things you want to pray about
  • Records your prayer requests
  • Reminds you of God’s answers to your prayers

What is prayer?

A conversation between you and God.

There is no need for prayer to intimidate us.  There are no rules.   God simply wants to hear from you.  He wants to hear what you are thinking; what you need, what you want, the desires of your heart.  He is lovingly waiting to hear from you.

God does provide some guidance to prayer and some of the things we should pray about in His Word.   I am so glad that He gave us some instruction on this very important topic.  We’ll talk about that in the next post.  It will help lead us as we create pages for our Simple Prayer Journal.

This Painting Tells a Story

Have you seen the video where a lady paints a picture while telling the story about the table with two chairs?  Toward the end of the video/painting, the one chair is covered with weeds while the other is free from weeds.

Why are there no weeds on the one chair?  Because that is where Jesus has sat each day waiting for us to spend time with Him.

Sadly, the other chair, covered with weeds, represents someone who didn’t make the time in their busy schedule to spend time with Jesus each day.

If this table and the two chairs represented your time with the Lord, would it look like this?

Or would one of the chairs be covered with weeds?

Sometimes we are so overwhelmed with the thought of prayer that we simply don’t spend time in prayer (and we let the weeds grow up on our side of the table).

Do you know what I mean?  I’ve been there.  Sometimes spending time in prayer has proven to be difficult.  There are so many different reasons that keep us from prayer.   Using a Simple Prayer Journal like the one we will be creating this month has helped me remove the barriers that have kept me from prayer time with the Lord.

In previous posts, I have already shared two of the tools I use for my prayer time:

Pray 24/7

In I Thessalonians 5:17 we are instructed to “Pray without ceasing.”  We talked in detail about this topic of praying consistently throughout the day in the Pray 24/7 post (it includes a beautiful free Printable).

That is a great way to help you spend time with God all day long.

Daily Prayer Journal

We’ve also talked about a Daily Prayer Journal using prompts in another post.  It’s a simple way of recording what we are praying about each day.  This one page per day journal (this includes two free printables) acts as a guide to help us stay focused on the things we want to pray about.

Another Resource for Prayer Time

There is another tool that I use for the times when I need a little more space for my thoughts and prayers.  It’s my Simple Prayer Journal.

There are some seasons in our lives when we need something more than just a daily prayer journal.  Sometimes we need more space in our journal.  We may want to write down more information.  Or maybe we have many more things to pray about.

For me, it’s not really about a season of my life, but sometimes, it’s just a different time of the year.

Oftentimes in the summertime, a Daily Prayer Journal is what works well for my quiet time.  Yet, as winter approaches I often feel a need for a Prayer Journal that is more detailed; a place where I can write more than just a simple word or two for each prayer topic.  I like a place where I can add even more resources for my quiet time with the Lord.

Simple Prayer Journal

When I am at that point, I like to use my Simple Prayer Journal.  It has a little bit in common with a bullet journal.  It didn’t start out that way, but, over the years, as the Journal grew, I integrated much of my note-taking style into my Simple Prayer Journal.

It’s the same style I have used for other personal and business matters.  It works for me, so it was only natural that I would wish to use the same approach to my Simple Prayer Journal.

Over the course of this next month or so, I will be creating a brand new Simple Prayer Journal for myself.

Would you like to Create Your Own Simple Prayer Journal?

I am going to share many of the pages and ideas I use in my Simple Prayer Journal with you.  I will be sharing printables that you can use to create your own Prayer Journal.

If growing in your prayer time is something that you desire, I hope that you will take this opportunity to create a Simple Prayer Journal of your own.

Remember that it is your Prayer Journal.  I will simply be sharing ideas with you.  Use the ones that will work for you and your quiet time with the Lord.

Perhaps my ideas will inspire some other ideas of your own that will work even better for you.  Some of the ideas may be just what you need for right now in your life.  Others, may be for another time.

Once again, it’s your Prayer Journal, so be sure to create one that will work for you.

    1. I love journals, but am terrible at journaling. lol. I hope you find some ideas and encouragement in this series.

  2. I love your prayer journal idea. I also created one for myself last year — I call mine the 12 Life Book Journals because there’s a new one for each month. It combines prayer, gratitude journaling along with daily life planning.

Thank you for sharing the story about the chairs. I imagine me sitting with a cup of coffee in hand listening to Jesus daily.

    1. I love the idea of a new one each month. It is wonderful to look back over them and see God’s answers to our prayers.
