Simple Prayer Time Basket

Simple Prayer Time Basket

Do you get distracted when you are praying? I know I do – Big Time! A simple Prayer Time Basket can help us deal with distractions that threaten to interrupt our prayer time.

Many years ago, when I was a teenager, and before computers were popular, I remember attending a Mother’s Day Banquet at our church. The special speaker for the day shared a review of all of the things she kept handy whenever she prayed. The idea stuck in my head and eventually I created a Prayer Time Basket to keep with me during my prayer time.

Why do we get distracted? Maybe it’s because we have so many things going on in our lives.

We are so busy!

We have so many responsibilities!

It’s difficult to sit and be still for even a few minutes.

We know that the enemy, Satan, wants us to get distracted when we are praying. The Bible makes this clear and gives us some instruction.

I Peter 5:8  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he way devour.

James 4:7  Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Ephesians 4:27  Neither give place to the devil.

We know that Satan does not want us to spend time praying, so he tries to distract us during our prayer time.

Preparation is the key!

If we prepare in advance, we can handle temptations and not fall for the enemy’s tricks to distract us during our prayer time. A Prayer Time Basket can be a helpful distraction-fighting tool!

The purpose of my Prayer Time Basket is two-fold:

1. It’s my toolbox for staying focused and dealing with distractions during my prayer time.

2. It’s my toolbox for using my Prayer Binder (I’ll be sharing details about this Binder in future posts).

My Simple Prayer Time Basket includes:

  •         Bible
  •         A pen
  •         Small notepad
  •         This month’s calendar
  •         Tissues
  •         Prayer List(s)

Bible – I like to begin my prayer time with reading some verses or a chapter in the Bible. Also, sometimes I want to find verses that are applicable to something I am praying about.

Pen – for adding notes to my Bible and for writing other notes to myself (see next item).

Small notepad – without exception, thoughts come to my mind each day during my prayer time – something I need to do, something I need to remember, someone to call, etc.

This is where I write those things down so that I don’t continue to think on those things when I want to be praying.  I know I can pick up that notepad after my prayer time and take care of anything on the list.

Tissues – if I don’t have these handy, I need one; so they are included in my Prayer Basket (much better than having to go get one).

Prayer List(s) – our church shares a prayer list each week, plus we have a prayer chain, or perhaps someone has asked us to pray for them. I try to put all my prayer lists into this basket so they are handy. They help me not to forget something I wanted to pray about.

Calendar – for this month. I don’t know why, but one of my distractions tends to be something I am suppose to do on a particular date. With a calendar handy, I can easily look at the calendar to remind myself of which day of the week that appointment/responsibility is. That relieves me of that thought and I can refocus on my prayer time.

If you struggle with distractions during your prayer time, I hope that this Prayer Time Basket idea will be helpful to you. Are there additional items that you would put in your Prayer Time Basket? I’d love for you to share them in the comments section below.

    1. I’m so glad this was helpful to you. We have to be constantly aware of how the enemy tries to keep us from our relationship with God and I believe we need to have all sorts of tools at our disposal, just as we keep Bible verses in our memory to use against him. May God bless you as you enter back into sweet prayer time with Him.

    1. Distraction is such a huge problem for so many of us. I love to find ways to fight it.
