Today we are going to create a Thankfulness page for our Simple Prayer Journal.

What is Thankfulness?

Gratitude

Gratefulness

A Personality Trait

A Way of Living

Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?  Did you know that people who live with an attitude of gratitude tend to live longer, sleep better, and often live happier lives.  I want in on that!

The Gratitude Movement

Do you remember the Gratitude movement?  Perhaps it is still going on.  I believe the idea was to identify 3 things that you felt gratitude for each day.  That is a good thing.

However, for whatever reason, I just could not join in.  I love routines, but I had a hard time consistently making the time to sit down and list 3 things I was grateful for each day.  Shame on me, I know, but I just wanted to be honest with you here.

But, I have found that if I instead include thankfulness as a part of my prayer time, it is not difficult at all.

So, I created a Thankfulness page for my Simple Prayer Journal.  There’s no rule that I add 3 things each day.  I just add whatever things come to my mind that day.  Some are already written on the page.  Others are unique to a specific day.

Thankfulness Page

I’m not sure how to describe my Thankfulness page.  It has a “Thankfulness” heading on it.  I write things on it that I am thankful for just willy-nilly all over the page.  Anywhere on the page, using a different color pen (or marker or colored pencil).  This is a nice touch because it makes each one stand out individually.

This is not my page, but it is an example so that you can get an idea of what I mean.

Daily Thankfulness

Many days I am thankful for the very same things that I was thankful for the day before.  God is so good to us and He keeps providing us with what we need each and every day.  Things like a roof over our head and food on the table, health and wellness, protection for us and our children, etc.  There’s no need to write them over and over again, but I do want to say thank you to the Lord for them regularly.  I sure don’t want to take any blessings from the Lord for granted.

Once they are on the page, they are a visual reminder that will encourage us to express thankfulness to the Lord whenever we pray.

Special Thankfulness

Somedays there will be special things that you’ll want to add to your thankfulness list.  You may wish to create a second page for those things.

Page Two of your Thankfulness pages could be for special thankfulness praises.  The day your grandchild is born, or the day you averted a close-call car accident, the day you recovered from an illness, etc. You could do these willy-nilly all over the page too.  Or, if you like things a little neater, you can just list them in a row.    Remember, this is your Simple Prayer Journal, so you can create the pages the way that you want to.

Consider adding the date to these items, so they’ll be a great memory down the road.  A reminder of God’s blessing to you that day.

You could write each one in a different ink color just like on the first page.

In my mind, thankfulness is represented by a rainbow of bright colors.  It makes me think of joy – things that make us happy.  That’s why I use different colors for each of the items on these two pages.

How is your Simple Prayer Journal coming along?

I hope it is coming along nicely and that it is helping you stay focused during your prayer time.

The Next Page

In our next post for your Simple Prayer Journal, we’ll be talking about a adding a Praying for Myself page.  You and your roles are so important.  I don’t want you to neglect praying for yourself during your prayer time.

Be sure to check out this Simple Prayer Journal page for a list of (and links to) all of the posts in this series.

  1. Throughout the day I often think about the things I’m grateful for, but I also like to write down a few things each week that I’m grateful for. It gives me a place to look back and appreciate everything. Recently I started using more colour too, which brings more joy to my gratitude. Thank you for sharing.
